More daft questions
What is a plexi?
And what is the difference (forgetting speakers) between a bass and guitar valve amp? I'd have thought a good amp would be reasonably flat.
Cheers me dears
Ian

Speakers aside, guitar and bass amps generally share the same circuit topology. The output transformer in tube bass amps may be heftier. The biggest differences I've seen are in the tone controls turnover frequency.
One other thing, you almost never see reverb in a bass amp.
This of course depends on maker and is a generalization.

Cheers for that.
Hadn't thought about the tone control. Makes sence.

Interestingly enough,

Mr. Marshall based his original "plexi" amps off the Fender Bassman (for the most part, the "Plexi" cloned the Bassman), which were being used for regular guitars. These bassmans, just like the "Plexi" Marshalls, depended on output tube distortion for distortion, the 3-stage preamps were not enough to deliver more than a fatter sound, so they really had to be cranked up for distortion.
