I've got my hand on a couple of very BIG capacitors. Should I get rid of them or should I use them in an oversized power supply?

There are basically two types of caps: one is Dielektrol 10uF/450V, 15uF/450V and 96uF/450V that look like this -

96uF is simply huge, heavy and terrifying.

And another is Mallory 2000uF/450V
looks like those -

2000uF? What for?

These are "oil" caps, not electrolytic. Functionally, they are like the 0.05uFd 450V caps you use for grid coupling, except bigger, and instead of a plastic film insulator they use porous paper soaked in special oil. They may last forever. They may leak carcinogenic oil. What is the date-code? Do they say "motor" on them?

Industrial systems. Super-clean/stable hi-fi: I used 470uFd 450V in a recent one-6L6 hi-fi amp. I don't think they are suited for guitar amps... 20uFd-200uFd are more common values in that field.

Many thanks. You're the only person on the forum answering my posts!
I'll try to make a 8W IC-based amp with a couple of those monsters just for fun and will report how it turns out.

I've already made one 18W with 2000uF/450V mallory and one small 1/2 W amp with space charge tubes and a 60000uF/50V filtering can. It works and looks awesome (if you're after cheesy overkill styling)! Pictures coming up next.

Some gigantohumongous industrial capacitors can suffer from high ESL.

If shopping new, look to inverter or SMPS grade types if possible. For example Panasonic TS-ED series is available in sizes to 450V 470uF- $9.34 @ Digikey. ESR is quoted at .282 @ 120hz and .127 @ 20khz.

GE Dielektrol is non PCB. I cant comment further as image is missing.
